Basic Needs Center Open House

The welcoming aroma of fresh pastries filled the air on September 2nd as Porterville College opened its doors for the Basic Needs Center Open House. Starting at 9:00 a.m., room AC-105 was a vibrant gathering space filled with conversation, laughter, and community support. Students, faculty, and staff gathered to explore the extensive resources designed to ensure every Pirate has the security and stability needed to thrive inside and outside the classroom.

Throughout the morning, attendees were treated to breakfast refreshments and hot coffee while meeting the center’s staff and peer navigators. The atmosphere was lively as students tried out the center’s practical amenities in real time. Some brewed a fresh cup of coffee and heated up snacks in the student kitchenette, while others walked through the free laundry facility to learn how to schedule wash cycles with the provided detergent and supplies. Racks in the clothing closet drew steady interest from students browsing everyday wear and professional attire, and several visitors sat down with team members to complete the Basic Needs Interest Form, register for the Pirate Pantry, and learn about CalFresh and transportation programs.

The Basic Needs Center is free and available to all currently enrolled Porterville College students who need support refueling, resetting, or navigating essential resources. Located in AC-105, the center operates Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. In addition, the Pirate Pantry food distribution hub is open Monday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Beyond groceries and the open-access kitchenette, students can utilize the on-site washer and dryers in two-hour reserved blocks, select one top and one bottom per month from the clothing closet, and access private morning shower facilities if experiencing housing insecurity. The center also connects students directly with local transit options, emergency housing navigators, and on-campus mental wellness support. For more information or to submit an interest form, students can visit AC-105, call (559) 791-2281, or email pc_basicneeds@portervillecollege.edu.
